Fall Seasonal Eating
By J, Perpetual Health
Hello Franklies! J from Perpetual Health here…You all know by now that my main approach to health revolves around proper human nutrition. That includes the lost art of seasonality. What does that look like? It looks like this…
Eating foods that are in season based on where you live. Farmer’s markets will help you understand that concept well. Here is just a short list of produce that is seasonal for autumn…
Artichokes
Broccoli
Beets
Cauliflower
Squash
Zucchini
Here’s a more complete list from the Weston A Price Foundation.
Now autumn, moving into winter, means a bit more fermented foods and bone broths. Fermentation was a traditional form of preservation and for those who love health facts: one tablespoon of organic sauerkraut has more probiotics in it than an entire jar of probiotics bought at a health food store.
The winter lends itself to more intentional fasting. As long as you are not in a category of those who should not be fasting (pregnant, nursing, underweight, eating disorder, etc..) the winter is an excellent time to teach your body to mobilize and use it’s own stores for energy.
As the holidays approach I will give you some tips on how to make the most of the time without tanking your health pursuits from the rest of the year.
The other thing about fall/winter is COLD! This is also the perfect time to be intentional with being a little cold. Whether that means not jacking up the heat in the house or going outside without a jacket, forcing your body to warm itself is good for your mitochondria! You didn’t think you were going to get an article written by me that didn’t mention mitochondria did you? Getting outside for the sunlight and fresh air can mean the difference in your fall/winter health regimen. If it snows, and you are able, go shovel. I look forward to some mother nature inspired exercise!
Last thing…have your prevention house in order. Things like povidone iodine nasal rinse and zinc acetate lozenges will keep you ahead of the curve if a potential infection tries to take hold. It’s really only cold/flu season because we tend to be outside less and our sun exposure decreases. You can offset this with the above mentioned ideas along with a little health prepping.
See you all soon!
